Kose announced 1Q FY3/11 results on 30 July. Consolidated 1Q sales rose 0.3% YoY, which seems slow relative to the 3.6% 1H growth forecast, but the company is working to cut costs and has commented that the 1Q OP level was in line with expectations. In July, the weather has been hot and shipments of products such as Adidas and Sekkisei brand sunscreens have been strong.

On 1 July, we visited Kose's Oji Research Laboratories, in Kita Ward, Tokyo. According to the company, this research center is where the company develops new products, and the center attempts to balance the needs of sales with the seeds for new product development that arise from basic research in ways that lead to better products. We were particularly impressed with the company's demonstration of the potency of kojic acid, an ingredient used in skin whitening products, which also showed the theoretical fast-acting properties of the acid.

Kose announced FY3/10 results on 30 April, with numbers in line with the revisions the company announced on 26 April. OP, at JPY10.1b, was JPY100m higher than the company forecast that accompanied interim results. NP was JPY5.2b, JPY1.6b higher than the mid-year forecast, because losses at subsidiaries were smaller than expected. Like its competitors, Kose struggled in the mid-range cosmetics business (prestige brands) in FY3/10.

On 26 April, Kose revised its earnings estimates for FY3/10. Management fine tuned its OP target from JPY10.0b to JPY10.1b. However, the company boosted its RP goal JPY1.1b to JPY10.8b and raised its NP objective JPY1.6b to JPY5.1b. The upward revision to its NP estimate factors in a decline in losses at a subsidiary, which was initially expected not to register taxable income and generate a loss, and a subsequent lower-than-expected tax rate on its books.

Kose reported 3Q earnings on 29 January. Cumulative 1Q-3Q OP amounted to 86% of the company's full-year target, exceeding the year-ago rate of 79%. We understand that sales (particularly of high-end products) are on pace to underperform company targets, and that the company is generating its current level of OP largely by controlling advertising and promotion costs.
